The Glebe Art Show 2009

The Glebe Art show is an annual community-run art exhibition which has been going for almost 10 years and opens its doors to all kinds of art making by people who live or work in the inner west. This year's show opens on Friday the 3rd July at 6pm and will be Benledi/ the Glebe library (186 Glebe Point Rd Glebe).

It's possibly not too late to submit an entry - either drawing, painting, printmaking or photography, each piece must be under 1 square metre in size, and be mounted and framed ready for hanging. Entry fee is $20 for one art work and $15 for a second artwork. They have a series of cash prizes (donated by local businesses and organisations) and artists are welcome to sell works (with a commission taken for continuing the show for future years).

I think you can pick up entry forms at the Glebe library, and work must be delivered on 30th June between 2-7pm.

A little exhibition that could be interesting...

Although known as a jeweller this exhibition of Michael Anderson's shows his involvment in painting in the development of his work.
Using symbols, black and white and found objects he somehow invites and entices the viewer to share his world.

Ken Unsworth exhibition COCKATOO ISLAND

An unsual exhibition but for those who never went to cockatoo island that is a good reason to see this place in the harbour of Sydney (for those who like a ride on a little boat).

Ken Unsworth

Born in Bendigo in 1931, Ken Unsworth started as a painter but began making sculpture when he was working at Bathurst Teachers College in 1966. Unsworth has had numerous solo exhibitions, in Australia and overseas, including a major survey exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1998. Often bitterly funny, Unsworth’s work mixes light and darkness in ways that keep us off-balance.
His works have been included in the Mildura Sculpture Triennial, 1973 and 1978; the Australian Sculpture Triennial, Melbourne, 1981, 1984 and 1993; and the Biennale of Sydney, 1976, 1982, 1984, 1986, 1990 and 2000. He has also participated in major international exhibitions including the Paris Biennale, 1985; Magiciens de la Terre, Paris, 1989; and the Biennale of Istanbul, Turkey, 1995. In 1978 Unsworth represented Australia at the Venice Biennale. He has received numerous awards including the Bi-centenary Sculpture Competition Award in 1970, and the DAAD Scholarship, Berlin, in 1987. In 1989 he was awarded an Australian Creative Fellowship, and was made a Member of the Order of Australia for service to sculpture. Ken Unsworth lives in Sydney.

Collograph workshop

Week 6. Final week (for now)

Dear friends,

We will continue and deepen our exploration of drawing next week on Tuesday evening at the Buzzbar cafe (349 King Street Newtown) at 7pm.

We'll be focussing on collaboration and exploring how it can release the drawing monster- put us in an appreciative and less judgemental mode. Don't miss this one- its also the anniversary of a collaborative project- the practise known as 'Di Di Di Di'. It can't be explained, but has to be experienced- so come along and discover it.

'Fieldwork', going into the streets to draw, will remain an integral part of the evening.

UTS Gallery has an exhibition opening this week called 'URBAN FUTURES: Ideas of the City':

Through intricate three-dimensional models, drawings and large-scale prints, architects and their advanced level students from the Architectural Association, London push architecture’s capacity to respond to the challenges set by global capitalism and climate change

There will be a symposium, and a couple of free lunchtime talks asspciated with the exhibition. Check the website for details.

WEEK 5

Tuesday 14th of April we will be meeting at Gallery 41, where one of our dear students is holding an exhibition. This week we will be focusing on light and shadow. Please bring an eraser, pencils, charcoals if you want, your drawing pad, and any other tool able to make marks that seduces you.

Like usual, 7 pm sharp. The address is 41 Riley St Woolloomooloo. For the second part of the class we'll explore this very interesting territory of the city.

The cosy Fitzroy Hotel

Here is my last drawing done with ink and stick.

I wanted to share this one in particular with you because I started it in the class as it was one of our work.

I felt a lot of strong emotions while drawing it. This was the first time really I did such a drawing with ink and I enjoyed a lot the material as I felt it translates my movements on the surface the way I wanted it and if not it's like a discovery of new effects I can use. Seems like ink and I are becoming friends!

I found it hard though to play with the light and contrasts though I think the dark side of this drawing evokes the night atmosphere we experience in this class.

So I'm dedicating this first drawing on the blog to the great teachers we have in this class and to all the students as our sharing conversations about drawing is something becoming precious to me.

Week 4, Tuesday 31st March

Today's Drawing Lesson will be held in THE OLD FITZROY HOTEL, 129 Dowling St, Wooloomooloo. If you look on a map, you'll find Dowling st is blocked if you try to go down it off William st. So go down McElhone or Forbes. Its a well-kept secret, a cosy pub in a fascinating area of the city- a real mix in demographic, a history of social demonstation and community, and a bit of grit.
